From a very early age, Mahmoud demonstrated immense sporting prowess and stood out amongst his peers as a talented athlete. At the tender age of 11 Mahmoud was asked to participate in a national sporting competition for outstanding athletes. He won the competition and was selected to attend the prestigious ‘Future Stars’ talented athlete school where he eventually graduated first in his year. From here he was selected to join the Egyptian National Weightlifting team where he was a key member from 2008 – 2013 and was twice crowned African Weightlifting Champion in 2009 and 2010.
In 2014, Mahmoud made the decision to retire from weightlifting competitions and to focus on passing on his skills to the younger generation through coaching. To date he has coached many athletes to regional level with three of his South African charges already competing on a global stage to much acclaim. His long term goal is to coach the UAE National Weightlifting and ensure as many local athletes as possible realize their dreams of competing at the highest level.
